Bayern Munich has entered the competition to sign Manchester United’s teenage prospect JJ Gabriel, who became eligible to join European clubs after turning 16 on Tuesday. The German club has maintained contact with Gabriel’s representatives following a meeting in May, and discussions resumed this week. Bayern’s head coach, Vincent Kompany, is reportedly a strong admirer of Gabriel, who has requested to cancel his registration with Manchester United, citing limited first-team opportunities.

The teenager’s camp, led by his father Joe O’Cearuill, is said to be seeking a seven-figure salary, a figure Bayern are reluctant to meet. Instead, the club aims to secure Gabriel’s services by guaranteeing a clear developmental pathway and regular playing time. Bayern has a history of accelerating youth talent to the senior squad, exemplified by the promotion of Lennart Karl directly from the under-19 team to the first team in 2025, bypassing the reserve side.

Aside from Bayern, Paris Saint-Germain, Real Madrid, and Barcelona have all been linked to Gabriel’s potential transfer. Barcelona has publicly distanced itself from these rumors. At present, Manchester United is unwilling to release Gabriel’s registration, blocking any domestic move until it expires in the summer. However, Gabriel possesses an EU passport through Irish and Cypriot heritage, allowing him to transfer within European Union clubs.

Gabriel has trained independently in Barcelona, expecting to secure more regular first-team opportunities elsewhere. Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick gave Gabriel a squad number and featured him in pre-season friendlies, but the teenager has yet to appear in a competitive match for the senior side. A contributing factor to Gabriel’s frustration was being selected for a UEFA Youth League match against Sabah FK while being omitted from United’s Champions League squad for a game against the same Azerbaijani opponent on the same day. Gabriel’s representatives believe he is ready to compete at the senior level and are actively seeking avenues that will accelerate his progression.
