KUWAIT — The Ministry of Islamic Affairs launched a national campaign on Monday aimed at raising awareness and preventing drug abuse among youth and the broader community. The initiative, titled “Be Aware,” was inaugurated by Acting Undersecretary Dr. Sulaiman Al-Suwailem and is organized by the ministry’s Rehabilitation and Evaluation Department at the College of Life Sciences, Kuwait University.
Dr. Al-Suwailem emphasized the crucial role of collective responsibility in safeguarding society against the risks posed by drugs and psychotropic substances. He noted that awareness efforts extend beyond simply understanding these dangers, focusing also on fostering sound decision-making skills to resist behaviors that endanger individuals and families. He underscored the need for cooperation among families, educational institutions, religious organizations, healthcare providers, and social services in combating drug abuse.
The campaign aims to integrate awareness, prevention, and treatment by educating young people about the harmful effects of drugs, enhancing their resilience to peer pressure and risky behaviors, and promoting the importance of rehabilitation. It also seeks to support those in recovery by facilitating their reintegration into society.
As part of the initiative, a series of events is underway at various colleges within Kuwait University, featuring panel discussions and lectures designed to engage the largest possible student audience. The launch event included an awareness exhibition with participation from multiple entities, including the General Directorate for Drug Control and the Ghiras Association.
An educational session was conducted for students during the event, featuring presentations by Dr. Hussein Al-Shatti, Director of the Addiction Treatment Center, and Professor Dr. Adel Al-Mutairat. The speakers addressed the dangers of addiction, strategies for prevention, and the legal and educational implications related to drug misuse.
The campaign forms part of the ministry’s broader efforts to promote values, community awareness, and rehabilitative support through various programs, including initiatives at correctional and youth care facilities.
