Authorities in Shizukuishi, a town in northeastern Japan, are searching for an Asiatic black bear believed to be responsible for a series of home break-ins targeting residents. The most recent incident occurred last Monday evening when an 87-year-old man, Mitsuo Matsubara, found the animal inside his home after hearing unusual noises in his kitchen. Upon investigation, Matsubara discovered his refrigerator door was open and food scattered on the floor. His wife promptly contacted the police.

Local officials suspect that the same bear has been involved in at least 14 break-ins across five different locations within the town in recent weeks. In response, they have implemented several measures to deter the animal and protect residents. These include setting up box traps, installing electric fences around homes frequently targeted by the bear, and increasing patrols to alert the community.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely as they work to safely capture the bear and prevent further incidents. Residents have been urged to remain vigilant and report any sightings or signs of bear activity to local law enforcement.
