Odell Beckham Jr. expressed surprise at his recent release from the New York Giants, despite limited playing time and opportunities earlier this season. The veteran wide receiver, 33, shared his reaction on social media, acknowledging that while his departure might have been expected, he had not anticipated being cut.
Beckham, a three-time Pro Bowl selection and former Giants star from 2014 to 2018, joined the team this year on a nonguaranteed contract valued at $1.3 million. He secured a spot on the roster coming out of training camp, despite competition and limited targets. Through the first three games of the season, Beckham was targeted only once and did not record any receptions.
The Giants’ coaching staff opted to release Beckham amid a crowded wide receiver depth chart, which includes players such as Malik Nabers, recently recovered from a knee injury, as well as Darnell Mooney and rookie Malachi Fields. Beckham indicated on Instagram that he approached the opportunity humbly, accepting a veteran minimum contract and focusing on earning playing time without emphasizing financial considerations.
“I came in HUMBLY, took [the] vet min then EARNED my spot n didn’t say nothing bout no $$$,” Beckham wrote. He added that being cut “didn’t hurt me but it did when they cut me like that, cause part of me is like I shoulda known better.”
Beckham’s recent NFL tenure has seen fluctuations. He did not play during the 2025 season due to injuries but returned in 2024 with the Miami Dolphins, recording nine receptions for 55 yards. Prior to that, he spent a season with the Baltimore Ravens, catching 35 passes for 565 yards and three touchdowns after recovering from a torn ACL.
His release from the Giants marks another phase in Beckham’s career as he seeks to find a roster spot amid ongoing competition and physical challenges. The Giants have yet to officially comment on the decision or their plans for the wide receiver position moving forward.
