Local actress Cynthia Koh faced travel disruptions on her recent trip to Bangkok due to flight cancellations and airport baggage delays linked to flooding in the Thai capital. The 52-year-old documented the sequence of events on social media, shedding light on the challenges encountered during her journey.
Koh arrived in Bangkok on September 29 for a scheduled wellness retreat but was alerted beforehand that baggage handling at Suvarnabhumi Airport had been severely affected by flooding that occurred over the weekend. In response, she opted to bring only hand luggage, packing a duffel bag weighing 6.67 kilograms and planning to use laundry facilities at her second hotel to manage the limited baggage.
Despite her preparations, Koh’s initial Thai Airways flight to Bangkok was canceled without prior notification via text or email. She discovered the cancellation through the iChangi mobile app and faced difficulty contacting the airline’s hotline for assistance. Thai Airways subsequently posted about the cancellation while Koh was asleep, although at midnight prior to the flight she had checked the status and found no indication of problems.
In an effort to maintain her travel plans, Koh purchased a separate ticket on budget carrier Scoot. However, she later learned that Thai Airways had rebooked her on a Singapore Airlines flight, part of their shared Star Alliance network, making the additional Scoot ticket unnecessary. Koh described her decision to buy a second ticket as “kiasu” — a colloquial Hokkien term for a fear of missing out — and acknowledged it was an overreaction.
Upon arrival in Bangkok, Koh reported clear and sunny weather, with no flooding experienced personally. She observed ongoing delays at baggage claim due to the earlier disruptions but noted that the situation appeared to be improving. Based on her experience, she advised travelers heading to Bangkok to travel light to facilitate quicker movement through the airport amid operational challenges.
This incident highlights the cascading effects of infrastructure disruptions on air travel and underscores the importance of communication and passenger awareness during such events. Koh’s experience also illustrates common traveler responses to uncertainty, including booking backup options to avoid potential delays.
