Steve Belichick, defensive coordinator for the University of North Carolina football team and son of head coach Bill Belichick, has taken a medical leave of absence, the head coach confirmed Thursday. The announcement came as the Tar Heels enter the second week of preseason camp ahead of their season opener against Texas Christian University in Dublin on August 29.

Bill Belichick declined to provide details about the nature of his son's medical situation, stating, "It’s a medical situation so I really can’t make any further comment on that." When asked about a potential timeline for Steve Belichick’s return, the head coach expressed hope that he would come back "as soon as possible." He also emphasized that the defensive coaching staff operates collectively and that the team will continue to adapt in Steve’s absence.

Steve Belichick joined the North Carolina program last year, marking the first collegiate coaching role for the NFL veteran alongside his father’s inaugural college season as head coach. Prior to UNC, he served as defensive coordinator at the University of Washington and had previous NFL experience working on the New England Patriots coaching staff under Bill Belichick.

During the 2023 season, the Tar Heels’ defense showed notable improvement, concluding with a 4-8 record. The team finished the year ranked 38th nationally in total defense, allowing an average of 336.9 yards per game, and tied for 20th place in sacks with 2.67 per contest. The coaching staff’s experience and depth are expected to help maintain continuity as Steve Belichick addresses his health concerns.
