Israel’s National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir acknowledged on Monday the importance of international diplomacy to the country’s national security, while emphasizing that security efforts should not be subordinated to diplomatic concerns. Speaking at an English-language election event for his Otzma Yehudit party in Tel Aviv, Ben-Gvir addressed the balance between Israel’s security priorities and its international standing.
Ben-Gvir, known for his far-right views and controversial rhetoric, which critics say have harmed Israel’s global image, said that both diplomatic and security interests must be pursued simultaneously. “It is not us or them. It is both at the same time,” he stated, highlighting the need to maintain robust security while also engaging in public diplomacy, particularly aimed at English-speaking audiences.
The event featured Yishai Fleisher, the international spokesman for the Jewish community of Hebron, who recently secured the number 12 slot on the Otzma Yehudit party list for the upcoming November 1 elections. Fleisher’s inclusion underscores the party’s efforts to strengthen its international outreach.
Ben-Gvir asserted that Israel must actively defend its security interests but also recognized the significance of maintaining diplomatic relations to ensure the country’s continued existence. “We have to fight on all fronts to make sure the state will continue to exist,” he said, underscoring a dual approach involving both military and diplomatic engagement.
The comments come as Otzma Yehudit campaigns ahead of the elections, seeking to rally support amid a politically charged environment, with national security and international perceptions remaining central to the political discourse.
