Christian Benteke, the Belgian striker known for his prolific scoring spells in the English Premier League, has embarked on a new chapter in his career with Abu Dhabi’s Al Wahda football club. After a distinguished tenure in Europe and a successful period in Major League Soccer (MLS) with D.C. United, Benteke arrived in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) bringing extensive experience to one of the country’s established teams.
Benteke, 35, highlighted his move as a pursuit of fresh challenges following his achievement of a long-held ambition to play in the Premier League. Over his time in England, he made 280 appearances and scored 86 goals, featuring prominently for clubs such as Aston Villa, Liverpool, and Crystal Palace. His subsequent stint in the MLS saw him net 47 goals in 93 matches, demonstrating consistent goal-scoring prowess.
Settling into life in Abu Dhabi has offered a new lifestyle for the forward, who contrasted the UAE’s pace and environment with his previous experiences in Europe and the United States. Having been familiar with Dubai through his children’s prior residence there, Benteke noted that living in Abu Dhabi is distinct but suits him well, describing it as peaceful and enjoyable.
On the football front, Benteke expressed surprise at the level of the UAE Pro League, admitting he had underestimated the competitiveness and quality prior to joining. Although he had attended games in the region before, the tempo and standards of the league’s matches surpassed his expectations. He acknowledged the challenges posed by the region’s climate, which requires adaptation due to its heat, but also emphasized that he does not miss the colder conditions of England.
Al Wahda, a club with a rich football history and high ambitions domestically, has introduced Benteke to a demanding sporting culture where results are paramount. He highlighted the pressure on players to perform and win, a dynamic that, while significant, he welcomes as part of the club environment.
Benteke’s transition reflects a growing trend of experienced European players bringing their talents to the Middle East, contributing to the development of football in the region while extending their professional careers in new settings.
