Luis Diaz marked his World Cup debut in an emotional fashion as he contributed a goal and an assist to help Colombia secure a 3-1 victory over Uzbekistan in their opening Group K match held in Mexico City. The 29-year-old winger, who now plays alongside Harry Kane at Bayern Munich, reflected on the challenging journey that brought him to football’s biggest stage, highlighting personal and professional hurdles along the way.
Diaz’s path to the World Cup included stints in Colombia, Portugal, England, and Germany. In 2023, he endured a harrowing experience when his parents were kidnapped by armed assailants. His mother was freed after a day in captivity, but his father remained held for 13 days. During this difficult period, Diaz was granted compassionate leave by Liverpool, his club at the time, underscoring the severity of the situation.
Speaking after Colombia’s victory, Diaz described the moment as deeply moving, saying he was on the verge of tears during the warm-up, overwhelmed by memories of his past struggles and the realization of his childhood dream. “I worked for this, I fought to be here at this moment, and today I am fulfilling my childhood dream of playing in a World Cup for my national team, for my country,” he said. He added that contributing directly to the win made the occasion even more special.
The match itself saw Colombia take the lead through a well-executed move. Six minutes before halftime, Diaz delivered a precise ball into the box that was met by Crystal Palace full-back Daniel Munoz, who scored to put Colombia ahead. Uzbekistan equalized just after the hour mark when Abbosbek Fayzullaev headed in a rebound following a saved volley by Eldor Shomurodov. However, Diaz restored Colombia’s advantage minutes later after the Uzbek goalkeeper failed to hold his shot.
Colombia sealed the win late in stoppage time with a header from Jaminton Campaz off a cross by substitute Cucho Hernandez. Uzbekistan continued to threaten, notably when teenager Bekhruz Karimov hit the bar in the closing moments, but they were unable to find another equalizer.
Diaz emphasized the collective effort behind the victory, stating, “I want to highlight what the team did because, without them, none of this would have been possible. We are a very close-knit group and will try to keep improving.”
Meanwhile, in other Group L action, Ghana secured a 1-0 win over Panama courtesy of a late goal by Caleb Yirenkyi. Ghana’s coach, Carlos Queiroz, who has previously managed at Manchester United and Real Madrid, signaled confidence heading into their next match against England. He noted the toughness of World Cup victories and vowed his team would continue to fight relentlessly.
Colombia’s win places them in a strong position early in Group K, with Diaz’s performance signaling a promising start to their tournament campaign.
