Luis de la Fuente has signed a contract extension to remain as head coach of the Spain national football team until 2032, the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) announced Monday. The 65-year-old coach, who took over from Luis Enrique in 2022, has guided Spain to significant successes in recent years, including their second FIFA World Cup title, victory at Euro 2024, and a UEFA Nations League championship.

De la Fuente expressed optimism about the team’s future, stating that “the best is yet to come” as he envisions continued achievements during his extended tenure. The announcement was made during an event held at the RFEF headquarters near Madrid, where De la Fuente reflected on the progress made since assuming the senior role after a decade working with Spain’s youth squads.

Before leading the senior team, De la Fuente achieved success with Spain’s Under-17 and Under-21 sides, winning European championships and guiding the national team to a silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021. Since his promotion, he has achieved a win record of 38 victories in 50 matches, underscoring his impact on the national setup.

RFEF president Rafael Louzan highlighted De la Fuente’s status as the most successful head coach in Spain’s history, emphasizing the federation’s desire for long-term stability and confidence within the coaching staff and players. Louzan noted that the original contract discussions focused on the year 2030, when Spain is set to co-host the FIFA World Cup alongside Portugal and Morocco, but the federation opted to extend the contract by two additional years.

“Hopefully he can continue beyond 2032, but the least we could do was offer a contract until 2032 to what is probably Spain’s most decorated national team coach,” Louzan stated, referencing the legacies of celebrated coaches such as Vicente del Bosque. He described the extension as a deserved recognition of De la Fuente’s contributions over 14 years with the federation.

De la Fuente, reflecting on Spain’s recent World Cup final victory against Argentina in New Jersey this past July, said that his focus has already shifted toward future objectives. With the contract extension, the federation and coach aim to build on the momentum generated by recent successes and prepare for upcoming international tournaments.
