VisitEngland has announced the winners of its 2026 Awards for Excellence, recognizing the best establishments in hospitality and tourism across England. The Kirkstyle Inn and Sportsman’s Rest, located in the village of Slaggyford, Northumberland, has been awarded the top honor as Pub of the Year, securing the gold award in the category.

The Kirkstyle Inn, which dates back to the 1800s, is situated near the border with Cumbria and is celebrated for its commitment to sustainability and local sourcing. The pub operates under a “field-to-fork” philosophy, sourcing produce within a 50-mile radius and focusing on seasonal and game-led menus. Head chef Connor Wilson emphasized the close collaboration with local farmers who have tended the moorlands for generations. Wilson highlighted their attention to animal welfare and sustainable practices, noting that whole animals are purchased when possible and that preservation methods like pickling and fermentation are used to minimize food waste and reduce the establishment’s carbon footprint.

The pub offers guests four spacious, en-suite bedrooms and a culinary experience that has earned it a listing in the Michelin Guide. Dining options include a £65 six-course lunchtime tasting menu available Thursday to Saturday, as well as fixed two- and three-course menus priced at £30 and £35 respectively. Visitors to the area can also explore the surrounding North Pennines or enjoy rides on the South Tynedale railway.

The silver award for Pub of the Year was given to The Tickled Trout in Barlow, Derbyshire. This two AA-Rosette gastropub is recognized for its elevated pub dishes and inventive specials. Meanwhile, the bronze award went to The Tollemache Arms in Northamptonshire, affectionately known as The Tolly. This 17th-century pub is noted for its traditional thatched roof, open fire, and classic British pub atmosphere.

Andrew Stokes, director of VisitEngland, described the awards as a celebration of the country’s distinguished tourism industry. He remarked that the accolades highlight the outstanding quality, customer service, and innovation that contribute to England’s world-leading status in tourism. Stokes also drew attention to the diversity of the awards, which extend beyond pubs to include experiences ranging from traditional blacksmith demonstrations in the Midlands to castle hotels and spas in national parks, as well as accessible and inclusive holiday options.

The VisitEngland Awards for Excellence continue to spotlight establishments that demonstrate passion and dedication to their craft, fostering both local culture and sustainable tourism across the region.
