Betnijah Laney-Hamilton is gradually working to regain her form after a challenging recovery from a left knee injury sustained during the inaugural season of the Unrivaled basketball team. The guard, currently with the New York Liberty, underwent surgery in March 2025 to repair an acute meniscus injury and has spent more than a year in rehabilitation.
Laney-Hamilton’s return to play has involved not only physical rehabilitation but also significant mental challenges. She has described the psychological aspect of trusting her body again and coping with the frustrations of not performing at her previous level as more difficult than the injury itself. During her recovery, she temporarily stepped away from the team for personal reasons, missing three games earlier this season, but has since returned and is showing steady improvement.
The Liberty coaching staff, led by head coach Chris DeMarco, has managed her reintegration carefully, with Laney-Hamilton presently coming off the bench. “It’s definitely different,” she acknowledged, but emphasized her commitment to fulfilling the team’s needs. Her development has been closely supported by the team’s director of player development Andrew Wade and assistant coach Courtney Paris, who have played key roles in her rehabilitation and mental preparation.
Wade highlighted Laney-Hamilton’s determination and work ethic throughout the recovery process, calling her response “extremely impressive” and noting the importance of resilience during the often monotonous phases of rehab. Initially limited to minimal movement, she gradually progressed through exercises that rehearsed specific basketball skills, focusing on milestones such as live one-on-one drills and consistent shooting practice. These incremental achievements have served as motivation throughout her return.
Recent performances reflect her ongoing progress. In a recent win against the Atlanta Dream, Laney-Hamilton initially had limited playing time and impact. However, when she re-entered the game in the third quarter, her presence helped expand New York’s lead significantly, demonstrating her growing confidence and contribution on the court.
Laney-Hamilton and the Liberty staff continue to focus on incremental improvements rather than immediate results. Wade emphasized the approach of accumulating “small wins” to gradually rebuild her performance, stating that achieving a championship is a long-term goal rather than an immediate expectation.
The Liberty face the Chicago Sky in an upcoming game Wednesday at 8 p.m., with Laney-Hamilton listed as questionable due to left knee management. Her status will be monitored closely as she continues her effort to fully reestablish her role with the team.
