Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is in discussions to join a consortium seeking to acquire a minority stake in Liverpool Football Club. The group, led by Amit Bhatia, former co-owner of Queens Park Rangers and son-in-law of steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal, has made a provisional offer reportedly valued at around £1.35 billion to purchase roughly 30% of the club from current owners Fenway Sports Group (FSG).

FSG confirmed that talks with Bhatia’s consortium are ongoing, describing the proposed investment as a strategic minority stake. The consortium is reportedly engaged in discussions with additional potential investors to secure the necessary funding. If the deal proceeds, Bezos, who has a personal fortune estimated by Forbes at approximately $257 billion, would receive equity in Liverpool, marking his first known investment in a Premier League club.

Bezos, 62, stepped down as Amazon’s CEO in 2021 but remains executive chair of the company. Under his leadership, Amazon diversified into entertainment and sports broadcasting, acquiring live rights to Premier League matches in the UK and Champions League games in Europe, as well as NFL broadcasts in the United States. Bezos has previously explored ownership of NFL franchises—namely the Seattle Seahawks and Washington Commanders—although those bids did not culminate in acquisitions.

The proposed valuation of Liverpool in this transaction, around £4.5 billion, would place the club above rivals Manchester United, which was valued lower when businessman Sir Jim Ratcliffe purchased a 25% stake two years ago. The involvement of Mittal’s financial backing is seen as significant, with the steel family’s estimated wealth at roughly £23 billion.

In preparation for the Liverpool bid, Bhatia recently divested his shares in QPR, transferring ownership to fellow co-owner Ruben Gnanalingam. Fenway Sports Group sold a 3% stake in Liverpool to US private equity firm Dynasty Equity in 2023, indicating willingness to consider partial sales to strategic investors.

Separately, Liverpool remains active in the transfer market and is reportedly competing to sign Monaco midfielder Maghnes Akliouche, with the Ligue 1 club rejecting several offers from Paris Saint-Germain, opening a potential opportunity for the Premier League side.

Representatives for Bhatia and the consortium declined to comment on the details of the negotiations. Meanwhile, both sides appear intent on advancing the talks, which could add a high-profile figure to the ownership structure of one of English football’s most prominent clubs.
