Marco Bezzecchi claimed victory at the MotoGP race held Sunday at the Pertamina Mandalika International Street Circuit in Indonesia, with Jorge Martin finishing third to reclaim the world championship lead from Marc Marquez. The race unfolded under intense heat and showcased a dramatic battle among top riders.
Bezzecchi, riding an Aprilia, overtook pole-sitter Raul Fernandez in the final third of the 27-lap contest to secure the win by a margin of 4.260 seconds. Fernandez, also riding an Aprilia and competing despite fractured fingers sustained in the Saturday sprint race, held onto second place. Martin, the reigning world champion riding Aprilia, came in third after recovering from a difficult start.
The result propelled Martin to the top of the championship standings with 355 points, narrowly ahead of Marquez, who finished sixth and trails by two points with 353. Bezzecchi remains a contender in third place with 309 points, keeping his title hopes alive as the season moves forward with five events remaining.
Bezzecchi expressed his satisfaction following the victory, marking his first win since May. “It’s amazing, I’m very, very happy,” he said. “It was a nice battle with Raul and I think me and all my team deserve a result like this. They have been through tough times with me.”
Martin, who started from the second row alongside Marquez, acknowledged the challenge of recovering positions after a poor start but emphasized his determination. “I did the maximum,” he said. “At the start I lost a lot of positions but tried to be calm and was overtaking riders step by step. We are still in the fight and still in the lead.”
Fernandez, who secured his first-ever MotoGP pole position despite his injury, demonstrated resilience throughout the race. After winning Saturday’s sprint race in which he collided with Bezzecchi, Fernandez quickly established an early lead in Sunday’s main event. He managed to keep Bezzecchi at bay for much of the first two-thirds of the race before conceding the top spot on lap 19 but fought hard to maintain second place.
Marc Marquez, a seven-time world champion riding Ducati machinery, won the sprint race on Saturday to take over the championship lead for the first time in the season. However, in Sunday’s grand prix, Marquez was unable to challenge the front-runners and finished outside the podium positions.
The race at the Mandalika International Circuit highlighted the intense competition among Aprilia riders and the ongoing battle for the MotoGP title as the season advances into its final stages.
