A glacial lake outburst flood occurred late Thursday night in northern Bhutan, causing damage to infrastructure at the Gasa Tshachu natural hot springs, officials reported. The flood originated from the Shintaphu glacial lake, which burst its banks, sending a surge of water downstream.

The Gasa Tshachu hot springs, located in the Gasa district near Bhutan’s northern border with India and China, are a well-known tourist destination in the region. According to Bhutan Broadcasting Service (BBS), there have been no reported injuries or fatalities linked to the flood.

While the full extent of the damage remains unclear, initial reports indicate that two bailey bridges in the area may have been washed away. Bailey bridges are portable, modular structures often used to span rivers and streams in remote areas.

Authorities are assessing the situation and are expected to provide further updates on infrastructure repairs and any ongoing risks to the local community and visitors.
