Hunter Biden’s recently launched memecoin, $LAPTOP, experienced a steep decline shortly after its debut, losing approximately 98 percent of its value within minutes on Wednesday. The digital token, which holds no intrinsic financial value, was introduced amid broader volatility in the cryptocurrency market.
Hunter Biden took to social media to address the token's brief rise and sudden collapse, stating that $LAPTOP was meant to serve as a symbol to encourage mutual support and national recovery. He contrasted his project with the $TRUMP memecoin, which was launched by members of the Trump family and which he characterized as a “grift.” In a post on X, Biden said the symbol originally associated with attempts to damage him had instead become one of “resilience, redemption and recovery,” while cautioning investors not to expect the token's value to increase.
The poor market response underscores the challenging environment facing cryptocurrency assets, particularly memecoins, which have suffered significant losses recently. Bitcoin itself has declined around 30 percent over the past year, and a collapse in digital asset treasury companies has wiped out roughly $80 billion in market value since mid-2025.
The $LAPTOP memecoin's launch comes as the crypto sector grapples with an uncertain regulatory and economic climate. Earlier initiatives under former President Donald Trump’s administration sought to promote the United States as a global hub for cryptocurrency, including easing some of the restrictions imposed during Joe Biden’s presidency. Trump’s administration also granted pardons to key figures in the crypto world, such as Changpeng Zhao, founder of Binance, who pleaded guilty last year to violating U.S. anti-money laundering laws.
Trump’s family remains actively involved in the crypto space; his sons co-founded a company called World Liberty Financial alongside the sons of White House envoy Steve Wofford. Disclosures released in June revealed that Trump’s diverse crypto ventures generated approximately $1.2 billion in 2025, even as many investors contended with losses. The $TRUMP coin itself has experienced a decline of around 75 percent over the last year, and legislative efforts to regulate the sector have stalled amid concerns about the former president’s financial interests linked to cryptocurrency.
Hunter Biden’s $LAPTOP coin references the unresolved controversy surrounding a laptop he left at a Delaware repair shop, which became a focal point during the 2020 presidential election campaign. The laptop’s contents spurred allegations regarding Hunter Biden’s business dealings and drew scrutiny toward then-candidate Joe Biden. Multiple government investigations concluded there was no evidence implicating President Biden in wrongdoing related to his son’s business activities, though material from the laptop was used in legal cases against Hunter Biden involving gun possession and tax charges. Joe Biden later pardoned his son on federal offenses, citing that Hunter had been “unfairly” targeted.
