Big Buck’s, one of the most celebrated staying hurdlers in recent history, has died at the age of 23. The horse was owned by the late Andy Stewart and trained by Paul Nicholls, with whom he shared a stable alongside other notable racehorses such as Kauto Star, Denman, Master Minded, and Neptune Collonges.

Initially seen by his connections as a promising chaser, Big Buck’s career took a significant turn after a fall at the final fence in the 2008 Hennessy Gold Cup. Following this incident, his owner and trainer decided to revert to hurdling, where he quickly established himself as a dominant force. Over hurdles, Big Buck’s won a record four Stayers’ Hurdles at Cheltenham, alongside four victories in the Liverpool Hurdle and three wins in the Long Walk Hurdle. His 18 consecutive wins over hurdles at one point set a remarkable benchmark in the sport.

Trainer Paul Nicholls described Big Buck’s as possessing exceptional ability, equating him to some of the best horses he has trained. However, Nicholls also acknowledged the horse’s limitations over fences, noting that despite winning a graded chase at Aintree, Big Buck’s was never a natural fence jumper, a factor that ultimately shaped his career trajectory. “He jumped 18 fences and jumped them 18 different ways and still won,” Nicholls said, but added it was a “shame he couldn’t jump a chase fence.”

Big Buck’s was known for his unique racing style, often showing signs of vulnerability mid-race before surging to victory, an aspect that endeared him to fans and earned him a strong reputation. His partnership with jockey Ruby Walsh was particularly noted for bringing out the best in the horse.

The relationship between Big Buck’s and owner Andy Stewart was also highlighted by Nicholls, who recalled that Stewart cherished the horse’s achievements and the journey they shared. After his retirement from racing, Big Buck’s enjoyed a comfortable life with Mike and Lucy Felton until his passing.

Big Buck’s death has prompted widespread tribute from the racing community, with many reflecting on his remarkable hurdling career and the enduring legacy he leaves behind as one of the greatest in the staying hurdle division.
