Major Australian companies are significantly increasing their investment in sports sponsorship, supporting elite athletes and grassroots initiatives across the country. Harvey Norman, Westpac, and Qantas are among the leading corporate backers contributing tens of millions of dollars annually to various sporting codes.
Harvey Norman, founded by Gerry Harvey, has been a longstanding supporter of female athletes, with sponsorships spanning Olympian Ariarne Titmus, Paralympian Madison de Rozario, and rugby league player Ali Brigginshaw. Katie Page, the retailer’s chief executive, attributes the company’s commitment to sports to her own experience of early encouragement from a teacher who recognized her potential at age 11. Page emphasized the importance of backing young athletes, noting the company’s involvement in scholarship programs, such as those at Western Sydney University, to foster the development of promising sportswomen.
Wheelchair racer Madison de Rozario, a Paralympic and Commonwealth Games medalist, highlighted the critical role corporate sponsorship plays in supporting athletes. She described such backing as “a game changer” that alleviates financial burdens and allows athletes to focus on performance while giving back to the community. De Rozario pointed out that partnerships like those with Harvey Norman help sustain the broader ecosystem surrounding elite sport in Australia.
Westpac has a deep-rooted connection to Australian sports, especially rugby league and cricket. Michelle Klein, the bank’s chief growth, brand, and marketing officer, said that sport sponsorship is a strategic priority for the company. Westpac is the primary sponsor of the Australian men’s and women’s cricket teams, a partnership now in its second year, and has supported rugby leagues in Queensland and New South Wales for many years. In addition to elite-level sponsorship, Westpac promotes participation at the grassroots level through initiatives such as the Her Game Grows campaign, aimed at increasing involvement of girls and women in cricket.
Qantas has invested over $60 million in sports sponsorship over the last decade, focusing on soccer and rugby union. Danielle Keighery, the airline’s chief brand and corporate affairs officer, stressed that sport is a defining element of Australian national identity and a source of pride for millions. The company’s sponsorship efforts reflect a commitment to supporting that cultural connection.
Collectively, these major sponsors play a pivotal role in nurturing Australia’s athletic talent and in promoting sport as an important pillar of the nation’s social and cultural fabric.
