The inaugural Athlos women’s athletics meet scheduled for October 2 at New York’s Icahn Stadium has been cancelled, according to organizers. The event, designed as an all-women competition featuring elite track-and-field athletes, was spearheaded by Alexis Ohanian, co-founder of Reddit and partner of tennis star Serena Williams.
Ohanian cited athlete feedback regarding the timing as the key reason for the cancellation, noting concerns that the New York event came too soon after the World Athletics Championships, which concluded recently in Budapest. "We are all-in on London," Ohanian said, emphasizing the focus would shift to a planned meet set for September 18 at the StoneX Stadium in London, which is also the home of the Saracens rugby club.
The London event is expected to proceed as planned and will feature notable British athletes including Keely Hodkinson, Georgia Hunter Bell, and Amy Hunt. The meet aims to offer significant prize money and create a high-profile platform exclusively for women’s competition.
Athlos was conceived as a way to elevate women’s athletics by providing a dedicated showcase event featuring top performers competing for substantial financial rewards. While the United States stop will no longer take place this year, organizers remain committed to establishing the series, starting with the London meet this fall.
