Billy Evans, fiancé of convicted Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes, has come under increased scrutiny following the release of the documentary “You Can See Everything.” The film, directed by Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim, chronicles the couple’s lives in the months leading up to Holmes’s incarceration in May 2023 for defrauding investors about the capabilities of her blood-testing company.

Despite extensive access granted to the filmmakers over a three-year period, Evans’s professional activities remain largely unclear. In both the documentary and a 2023 article by journalist Amy Zocick—whose reporting is referenced in the film—Evans offers vague descriptions of his work, describing himself as involved in “a lot of different stuff,” including investing and launching startups, without providing specific details.

Further investigation reveals that Evans serves as the chief executive officer of Haemanthus, a blood-testing startup that bills itself as employing a “radically new approach to health testing.” The company is based in Austin, Texas, a city listed as Evans’s residence on his LinkedIn profile. The San Diego native and Massachusetts Institute of Technology economics graduate relocated to Austin, where he lives with Holmes and their two children: William, born in 2021 shortly before Holmes’s trial, and Invicta, born in 2023.

Evans’s family owns the Evans Hotels chain, a small portfolio of luxury properties in Southern California established in 1953. However, a statement from the hotel company dated October 11 emphasized that Evans has no involvement in the business in any capacity, either as an employee or shareholder.

The documentary captures Evans frequently on the move, yet it offers little insight into the nature of his work or sources of income. This ambiguity echoes earlier accounts from observers who spent time with the couple. When asked about his occupation, Evans’s responses have remained non-specific, amplifying questions about his professional profile.

Evans, 34, and Holmes, 42, met in 2017 at a social event during San Francisco’s Fleet Week. According to Evans, they quickly formed a close bond, despite Holmes already being under federal investigation at the time. Their relationship developed amidst significant public and legal challenges for Holmes, following the 2015 Wall Street Journal exposé that unraveled Theranos’s claims of revolutionary blood-testing technology.

In 2018, the couple became engaged, reportedly at a Taylor Swift concert, and attended Burning Man together, where Holmes performed a ceremonial burning of a Theranos tribute. Following Holmes’s indictment, the two spent six months traveling across the country in an RV prior to her sentencing. Holmes, currently serving time at F.P.C. Bryan, a minimum-security federal prison near Houston, is expected to move to a halfway house in Del Valle, Texas, near Austin, in August 2024.

Holmes has expressed ambivalence about formalizing their relationship. In a 2025 interview from prison, she stated that marriage was not a priority and that their connection “is more than a piece of paper.” Efforts to obtain comment from Evans were unsuccessful.
