A seminar on biofertilizers was held yesterday morning at the Yangon Region Department of Agriculture to promote organic agriculture practices. The event was jointly organized by the Myanmar National Farmers’ Association - Myanmar Institute of Economic Development (MNFA-MIED) and the Agri Institute of Asia (AIA), focusing on the practical application of biofertilizers informed by laboratory research.

Yangon Region Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation Minister Dr. Htoo Maung highlighted the importance of producing residue-free agricultural products to ensure food safety. He stressed that the increased adoption of organic and biofertilizers is essential for cultivating chemical-free crops that comply with international standards, which in turn could enhance the country’s agricultural export potential.

U Tint Naing, head of the Yangon Region Agriculture Department, spoke about improving soil health through the use of organic and biofertilizers. He also noted the advantages of integrating chemical fertilizers with organic amendments as part of a balanced approach to crop nutrition.

Dr. Myint Lwin, patron of the Myanmar National Farmers’ Association, provided insights into the role of microorganisms in agriculture, particularly the microbial components involved in biofertilizer production. He emphasized the importance of collaboration among researchers, producers, and farmers to optimize the benefits of biofertilizers.

The seminar underscored the use of beneficial bacteria and microorganisms in biofertilizer formulations and addressed standards for their production and proper utilization to support sustainable agricultural development in the region.
