Bishop’s Stortford secured a 3-1 victory over league leaders Real Bedford in a crucial Pitching In Southern League Premier Central Division match on Saturday, despite being reduced to nine men. Both Craig King and Jordan Ponticelli were shown red cards during the game, marking Real Bedford’s first defeat of the season.
The decisive moment early in the match came when Bishop’s Stortford took the lead after a lofted midfield pass bypassed the Bedford defense. Tyrone Baker broke through and, after substitute goalkeeper Tom Hitchcock slipped on the wet pitch, Baker passed to Norris, who converted into an open net.
As the first half neared its conclusion, Baker struck a shot that rebounded off the crossbar. Norris was on hand to score his second goal, doubling Stortford’s advantage going into halftime.
Real Bedford managed to reduce the deficit seven minutes into the second half when Ben Stevens scored with a header from a right-wing cross. However, the Blues regained a two-goal lead in the 74th minute after a penalty was awarded following a foul by Jordan Ponticelli on Alfie Wellens inside the box. Baker successfully converted the penalty to make it 3-1.
Shortly after the penalty, Ponticelli received a second yellow card for a foul near the away dugout on Scott Simmons, reducing Stortford to nine players alongside goalkeeper King, who had been sent off earlier for denying a clear goalscoring opportunity on Baker.
Despite the numerical disadvantage, Bishop’s Stortford maintained their composure and defensive organization to hold on to the lead and claim the win. The result ended Real Bedford’s unbeaten run in the division and tightened the competition at the top of the table.
