Sunderland Football Club is reportedly engaged in discussions with Turkish Super Lig team Eyüpspor regarding a potential transfer for striker Ahmed Abdullahi. The 22-year-old forward, who has yet to make a competitive senior appearance for Sunderland, was notably absent from the first-team squad during Saturday’s pre-season 5-1 win against York City. Instead, he played for Sunderland’s under-21 side in a match against South Shields, suggesting his position within the club’s striker hierarchy may be uncertain.

Abdullahi joined Sunderland in August 2024 from Belgian club Gent, signing a four-year contract at the Stadium of Light. His time at the club, however, has been hindered by a series of injuries that have restricted his chances to break into the senior team. Prior to his move to Sunderland, Abdullahi had attracted attention from several prominent European clubs, including trials with Marseille and Borussia Dortmund in 2021. Internationally, the Nigerian forward has represented his country at the under-20 level and was selected for the 2023 Africa Under-20 Cup of Nations.

Sunderland’s current attacking options appear to limit Abdullahi’s opportunities for first-team football. Strikers Brian Brobbery and Wilson Isidor seem to be prioritized ahead of him, while young forward Trey Ogunsuyi has also featured in the pre-season preparations. Despite this, the club’s busy schedule, which includes Premier League, domestic cup, and European fixtures, could provide chances for squad rotation and appearances from the wider roster.

As talks with Eyüpspor continue, the potential move may offer Abdullahi a fresh opportunity to gain regular playing time and further his professional career. Sunderland, meanwhile, appear to be reshaping their attacking ranks as they prepare for the upcoming season.
