Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca has described Sunderland as the toughest challenge his team will face since the start of the season ahead of their Premier League clash at the Etihad Stadium. Maresca, who has overseen six consecutive victories across all competitions following a defeat in the Community Shield, singled out the Wearsiders for their strong recent performances and well-organized style of play.
“I have the feeling that the Sunderland game will be the toughest game since we started the season,” Maresca said, noting that he had studied several of Sunderland’s matches, including their recent fixture against Arsenal. He suggested Sunderland deserved a better result in that game and praised their team cohesion and the tactical approach of their manager. “We’ll need a top performance to beat them,” he added, emphasizing the need for his squad to be at full strength.
Maresca has seen steady progress in Manchester City’s play but refrained from setting specific timelines for the team to reach his desired level. “There is always room to improve,” he said. “It’s day by day. Now we can prepare for Sunderland and that is the only thing that I have in my mind.”
The City manager opted to make significant changes to his lineup during their recent 5-0 win over Championship side Norwich City in the Carabao Cup, rotating ten players. Among those who impressed in the absence of first-choice stars was 17-year-old forward Floyd Samba, who stepped up in place of Erling Haaland and scored twice.
Samba, a product of City’s academy and the son of former Blackburn defender Christopher Samba, is hoping to capitalize on emerging opportunities under Maresca’s leadership. However, he also faces an important decision regarding his international career, as he remains eligible to represent multiple countries. The Macclesfield-born forward has received youth call-ups from England, France, and Germany—the latter two through his parents—and may even qualify to play for Congo via the grandparents rule, following his father’s heritage.
Asked about his national team preference, Samba said, “All three right now. I haven’t chosen. I haven’t stuck to one yet, but we’ll see in the future. I think the opportunity will come somewhere, so I’ll just have to wait for that.”
Manchester City will look to maintain their unbeaten league run when they host Sunderland, with Maresca centered on achieving a focused and high-level performance to overcome a resilient opponent.
