The 38th Doha Theatre Festival concluded recently with the performance of *Al-Hair al-Aswad* (The Black Pearl Bank) by Al-Watan Theatre Company, a production that highlighted the Gulf’s maritime heritage and pearl-diving traditions through a fantastical theatrical lens. Written and directed by Shu’aib al-Kuwari, the play centers on a young man tasked with retrieving a rare pearl from the perilous Black Pearl Bank as a prerequisite for marrying his beloved. The narrative, set against an imagined seascape inspired by the Gulf’s pearl-diving past, delves into themes of ambition, courage, and perseverance.

Following the final performance, an applied seminar was held to discuss the artistic and symbolic elements of the play, with particular emphasis on the Black Pearl Bank as a key dramatic motif. Theatre artist Ahmed al-Muftah praised the production for its connection to traditional storytelling, highlighting the depiction of a humble young man striving to marry into a wealthy family alongside a rival suitor’s parallel pursuit. He noted, however, that while the play’s foundation in heritage-based narratives was clear, its central symbol—the black pearl—could have been more deeply explored. "It could have been developed further through a more layered use of the central symbol, so that it would not remain merely a title concept but evolve into a symbolic axis capable of driving the narrative toward broader dimensions beyond the conventional framework," al-Muftah said.

Eng Abdullah Dasmal al-Kuwari, the stage designer, commented on the production’s dramatic structure, describing the text as simple and lacking build-up, a factor he said was reflected in the overall work. Despite this critique, he acknowledged the significance of the Doha Theatre Festival as one of the Gulf region’s longest-standing theatre events and commended this year’s edition for attracting leading artists and directors and showcasing productions appealing to diverse audiences.

The production employed a cohesive visual language, using scenography, lighting, and sound effects to create an immersive and fantastical atmosphere that complemented its symbolic themes. With *The Black Pearl Bank* closing the festival, the event reaffirmed the vibrancy of Qatari theatre. The subsequent seminar underscored the ongoing relevance of heritage-inspired narratives and the creative opportunities they present for contemporary theatrical expression.
