The Chicago Blackhawks suffered a 4-0 defeat against the Dallas Stars in the first of four meetings between the Central Division rivals this season on Saturday night at the United Center. The loss came before a crowd of 18,233 and extended the Blackhawks’ struggles at home, dropping their record to 2-2-0 on a seven-game homestand and 3-6-0 overall.
After enjoying a relatively successful 2025-26 season against the Stars, winning two of three games, Chicago found itself outplayed throughout the night. Despite early offensive pressure, the Blackhawks failed to convert several scoring chances, with the first period ending scoreless. Chicago was outshot 12-5 in the opening frame but managed to keep the Stars from scoring, including a disallowed goal by Dallas’ Jason Robertson due to offside.
Coach Jeff Blashill highlighted continuing issues with defensive-zone coverage and puck control. “We made too many mistakes out there with pucks, passes all around the ice,” said defenseman Alex Vlasic, noting Dallas capitalized repeatedly on turnovers. Captain Connor Bedard acknowledged missed opportunities, saying, “We had a few good looks where if they go in, it obviously changes the game.”
The second period saw a decline in Chicago’s offensive intensity, allowing Stars goaltender Jake Oettinger to face limited pressure. Oettinger, who stopped 19 shots in the game, earned his third shutout in six starts as the Stars extended their lead. Blashill explained the team’s struggles to maintain aggression near the net: “They boxed out, slashed, fronted a lot of those pucks or we just didn’t have much of a look at the goalie.”
The Blackhawks entered the game on the back of their first consecutive wins this season but were unable to sustain momentum. With a five-day break before their next contest against the Montreal Canadiens on Friday, Bedard expressed optimism that the additional practice time could help the team regroup and improve. “We got five days, kind of weird, but we can practice, work on stuff and get better,” he said.
Chicago’s challenges in puck handling and defensive execution were evident throughout the game, allowing the Stars to control much of the play. The Blackhawks will look to rebound when they resume their schedule next week.
