Erik Prince, founder of the private military company Blackwater, has launched a new venture focused on air-defense systems in partnership with the Ukrainian drone software firm Swarmer, in which he holds a stake. The company, named Vectus Air Defense Systems, aims to provide hardware and operational management for layered air-defense networks under multiyear contracts, employing an "air defence as a service" business model.
Prince, who stepped back from Blackwater following its sale in 2010, has established himself as a prominent figure in private military and security services globally. Vectus Air Defense Systems reflects his continuing efforts in this sector, combining technologies from the United States, Ukraine, Israel, and other countries. These technologies include sensors, electronic warfare equipment, interceptor drones, and rapid-firing large-calibre guns designed to counter evolving aerial threats, including low-cost drones.
Swarmer, a company that went public in March and for which Prince serves as non-executive chairman, holds a 20 percent stake in the new venture. Prince’s representatives indicated that he owns the remaining shares, with discussions underway to potentially bring in additional investors.
The initiative seeks to offer a cost-effective alternative to high-priced anti-ballistic missile systems, such as the Patriot missiles used in conflicts in the Middle East. Swarmer, whose software has reportedly supported over 100,000 combat missions in Ukraine, will contribute to the development of counter-drone systems, including technology that enables interceptor drones to operate cooperatively in swarms.
Alex Fink, president and US chief executive of Swarmer, highlighted the shifting economics of aerial threats, noting that defending against such threats "requires a new cost structure." Prince echoed this sentiment, emphasizing a growing need for private-sector solutions due to the rapid evolution of airborne threats.
Prince’s spokesperson said he has spent the past year engaging with technology suppliers and prospective clients across Ukraine, the Middle East, Africa, and Latin America. The service targets large commercial and civilian assets that may lack full government protection or prefer private defense arrangements.
Beyond Vectus Air Defense Systems, Prince manages other security enterprises, including Vectus Global, which operates anti-piracy missions in Haiti and provides security for mining operations in the Democratic Republic of Congo. This company remains a separate entity from the newly established air defense venture.
A former Navy SEAL, Prince has previously been involved in various security roles worldwide, including recruiting mercenaries for Abu Dhabi, protecting shipping from Somali pirates, and advising the Chinese government on overseas security logistics. Through Vectus Air Defense Systems, he is expanding his footprint in the evolving market for private air-defense solutions.
