England captain Ben Stokes has been reinstated to lead the Test side in their upcoming match against New Zealand in Nottingham, following the conclusion of a disciplinary investigation. The decision comes after Stokes was cleared of involvement in an altercation that resulted in two attacks on teammate Gus Atkinson.

Stokes and Atkinson were originally suspended from the squad after an incident at a Chelsea nightclub in the early hours of June 8. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) conducted a probe which found Atkinson was the victim of two unprovoked physical attacks by Saracens rugby player Totoa Auvaa, while Stokes was neither involved nor present during the altercations. Despite this, both players received written warnings for conduct that breached the terms of their England contracts.

The ECB’s investigation determined that the players violated specific contractual obligations requiring them to maintain high standards of behavior and act in the best interests of England cricket. However, the board concluded there was no evidence to assign blame for the violent incidents to either player. An independent Cricket Regulator's investigation, conducted parallel to the ECB’s inquiry, also found that Stokes and Atkinson had no case to answer on the question of provocation.

Both athletes avoided financial penalties and will return to the squad for Thursday’s series decider, following New Zealand’s dominant 253-run victory at The Oval which evened the series 1-1.

England head coach Brendon McCullum expressed confidence in Stokes’s return and leadership. He described the relationship with Stokes as one marked by mutual respect and open dialogue, acknowledging that robust conversations are typical when working alongside those in leadership roles. McCullum also sought to separate Stokes’s personal character from occasional mistakes, emphasizing the importance of maintaining standards while recognizing human errors.

“Ben will be back. He’ll be back and he’ll be captain,” McCullum said, highlighting their shared vision for the team’s future. He reflected on their collaborative achievements over the past four years as well as the setbacks they have faced, indicating a continued commitment to work together.

The squad’s resumption of full strength comes at a critical juncture in the series, with the final Test poised to decide the outcome between England and New Zealand.
