Dame Amanda Blanc will step down from the board of BP at the company’s annual meeting next year, the energy firm announced Tuesday. Blanc, 59, who also serves as CEO of the insurer Aviva, has held the role of senior independent director at BP for four years.

Her departure follows a turbulent period for the oil major’s board, particularly surrounding the brief and troubled tenure of former chairman Albert Manifold. Manifold was appointed to the chairmanship under Blanc’s oversight but was removed in May after less than a year amid allegations of bullying—claims he has dismissed as false. The events have drawn scrutiny to Blanc, who led the process that resulted in Manifold’s appointment despite his lack of experience in the oil and gas sector, having previously served as chief executive of building materials company CRH.

As senior independent director, Blanc was responsible for monitoring the chairman’s performance and played a central role in the decision to remove Manifold. BP’s official filing referenced “serious concerns” related to governance standards, oversight, and conduct in connection with his departure, but did not explicitly mention the bullying allegations that later became public.

The challenges at BP represent a setback for Blanc, whose leadership at Aviva has been widely praised for its strong turnaround. A source close to Blanc indicated her decision to leave BP was motivated by a desire to concentrate on her responsibilities at Aviva, although the topic of balancing the two roles had been raised by some Aviva investors who questioned how much time she dedicated to BP.

Blanc’s exit was announced alongside the permanent appointment of Ian Tyler as BP chairman, following his interim tenure. Tyler’s promotion came after a selection process led by Blanc. Tyler commented that, although he had requested Blanc remain on the board, she believed now was an appropriate moment to plan her departure after completing the chair search.

BP did not provide further details on the timing of Blanc’s final departure from the board. The company is navigating ongoing reputational and governance challenges as it seeks to stabilize leadership and restore investor confidence.
