At least five people were killed on Tuesday in northwest Syria’s Idlib province when a vehicle carrying munitions exploded, Syrian authorities reported. The incident occurred in the town of Binnish, according to a government source who spoke on condition of anonymity. A security official cited by the state news agency SANA confirmed the blast involved a vehicle transporting explosives but did not specify the cause of the explosion.
Images released by the state media showed charred vehicles and emergency responders extinguishing fires at the scene, with debris scattered throughout the area. Local health officials confirmed the death toll, though no further details about the victims were immediately available.
Idlib province has been a focal point of ongoing conflict in Syria, previously serving as a stronghold for rebel and militant factions, including foreign fighters. These groups controlled parts of the region until regime forces overthrew longtime President Bashar al-Assad in December 2024. Since then, the area has experienced intermittent explosions targeting military sites and arms depots, often with little public explanation from authorities.
Similar incidents have been reported over the past year. In November, an explosion at a missile and ammunition warehouse in Kafr Takharim killed five people and injured nine others, according to security forces. Earlier that same year, an explosion at a war remnants depot on the outskirts of Idlib city resulted in four fatalities. Additionally, in August 2025, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported a series of blasts at an arms storage site linked to the Uyghur-dominated Turkistan Islamic Party in Maaret Misrin, which left at least 12 people dead and around 120 wounded.
These recurring explosions underscore the persistent instability in the region, where ongoing clashes and the presence of various armed groups continue to complicate security and reconstruction efforts. Authorities have yet to clarify whether recent incidents stem from accidental detonations, sabotage, or other causes.
