A billboard belonging to National MP Carlos Cheung was destroyed by fire in Auckland's Three Kings area shortly after midnight yesterday, an incident Cheung described as deliberate. The billboard, located within the Mt Roskill electorate, had previously been vandalized before being set ablaze.
Cheung condemned the act on social media, emphasizing the reckless and dangerous nature of deliberately setting fire to election signage. He highlighted the potential risks to people, property, and the broader community stemming from such actions. Despite the attack, Cheung expressed confidence that the incident would not deter voters. Instead, he suggested it would galvanize supporters to engage more actively in the electoral process.
“We know we are doing the right thing. We are fixing the basics and building the future. We will not be intimidated,” Cheung said, reaffirming his commitment to standing up for the community, democratic processes, and the right of all New Zealanders to participate freely and safely in elections.
Fire and Emergency New Zealand confirmed that they received a call reporting a sign on fire in Three Kings just after midnight. A crew from Balmoral responded to the scene and extinguished the blaze. The National Party said the matter has been reported to police but declined to comment further, describing it as inappropriate to do so at this stage.
Authorities have not disclosed whether an investigation into the cause of the fire or any potential suspects is underway. The incident raises concerns over the safety and security of election materials amid ongoing campaigning in the lead-up to the upcoming vote.
