A blue plaque commemorating the late Terry Joyce, a celebrated performer from Tyneside, was unveiled at the Iona Club in Hebburn. Born in 1953 and passing away in 2024, Joyce was known for his work as a comedian, impressionist, and actor, with appearances in television programs including the sitcom Hebburn, Super Gran, Spender, and Byker Grove.

Joyce was not only recognized for his on-screen roles but also for his active engagement in the local community. He frequently participated in fundraising events and supported various charitable initiatives across South Tyneside. His presence on the club circuit was highly regarded, making him a popular figure in the regional entertainment scene.

The plaque, installed at a venue closely associated with his career, reads: “Comedy, impressionist and actor. Star of clubs, stage, screen and supporter of charities. A proud Hebburn lad and legend who brought joy and laughter to all he met.” The tribute aims to highlight both his professional achievements and his dedication to community causes.

Coun Alan Rice, deputy mayor of South Tyneside, led the unveiling ceremony and emphasized the significance of the blue plaque scheme in preserving local heritage. He described the tribute as a lasting recognition of Joyce’s contributions to the area, noting that it celebrates his legacy as both an entertainer and a supporter of others in his hometown. “The blue plaque ensures that Terry Joyce’s story will continue to inspire," Rice said.

Jennifer Joyce, Terry’s wife, expressed pride in the public acknowledgement of her husband’s life and work. She described him as a person with a unique talent and keen wit, who consistently sought to brighten those around him through storytelling and humor. According to Jennifer, Terry’s ability to combine sharp timing with a generous spirit was central to his character: “Terry always said he was good at ‘living and laughing’. That was his true gift.”

South Tyneside Council and private sponsors annually select up to three recipients for blue plaques, with nominations for the 2027 awards closing on August 31, 2026.
