Barisan Nasional (BN) assemblymen in Negri Sembilan have been urged to avoid involvement in disputes related to the state’s royal institution and to concentrate on their responsibilities to the public, according to Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
Speaking in Kuala Lumpur, the BN chairman emphasized that elected representatives should prioritize serving their constituents over engaging in controversies surrounding the Dewan Keadilan dan Undangan (DKU) and other royal and customary institutions. He advised that political and administrative matters be kept separate from those concerning the royal establishment.
“The focus should be on addressing the needs of the people who entrusted us with their mandate,” Ahmad Zahid said. “Issues involving the royal institution require a respectful distance from political interference.”
The remarks come amid an ongoing crisis involving the Negri Sembilan royal family and state government. The dispute originated when four Undang—traditional chieftains with authority in selecting the Yang di-Pertuan Besar—declared the removal of Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir from the position. Tensions escalated further last month after the state executive council acknowledged this removal, prompting Tuanku Muhriz to dismiss the executive council members in response.
Despite the political uncertainty, Ahmad Zahid noted that the state government is proceeding with preparations for the 2027 Budget, signaling efforts to maintain administrative continuity amid the crisis.
Separately, Ahmad Zahid addressed the forthcoming Melaka state election, confirming that discussions regarding political cooperation within Barisan Nasional have concluded. He indicated that state BN chairman Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh will announce the final arrangements soon. The Election Commission has scheduled the nomination day for October 31, early voting on November 10, and polling on November 14.
