The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has criticized comments made by the inspector general of police (IGP) concerning the use of "crossfire" operations during law enforcement activities. The party called for greater accountability and adherence to the rule of law in response to the IGP’s statements.
BNP acting secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi expressed concerns about the police chief's remarks, which he said had caused embarrassment to the government. Rizvi made the remarks on Tuesday at a free medical camp in Dhaka commemorating the 48th founding anniversary of Jatiyatabadi Jubo Dal, the youth wing of the BNP. He highlighted the party’s history of opposition against enforced disappearances, extrajudicial killings, and misgovernance in Bangladesh.
The controversy surrounding the IGP’s comments has raised questions about his continued leadership in the police force. Officials indicated that the final decision on the police chief’s future will be made by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman upon his return from an overseas trip to Japan.
The IGP’s acknowledgment of crossfire tactics, which typically refer to fatal police encounters with suspects, has drawn criticism from opposition groups and human rights advocates who oppose such extrajudicial methods. The government has yet to provide a detailed stance on the issue, pending the Prime Minister’s input.
As the situation develops, the fate of the police chief remains uncertain amid growing public and political scrutiny over law enforcement practices in Bangladesh.
