National Citizen Party (NCP) Convener Nahid Islam alleged on Tuesday that the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) is attempting to monopolize political power and hinder a peaceful transition of authority while in office. Nahid made the remarks during a press conference held in Munshiganj.

Addressing the role of the caretaker government system, Nahid highlighted its historical significance, noting that the concept gained traction during the mass movements of the 1990s and was supported broadly by various political parties. He recalled that the BNP conducted a one-sided election in 1996 but ultimately had to relinquish power following widespread protests.

Nahid pointed to the events of 2006, accusing the BNP of politicizing the judiciary by attempting to appoint its preferred nominee as the head of the caretaker government. He drew a parallel between the Awami League and BNP, stating that both parties have sought to dominate power; however, he claimed, while the Awami League was successful in this endeavor, the BNP was not.

The NCP convener further accused the BNP of deliberately delaying the reinstatement of the caretaker government system and conspiring to place its loyalists in influential positions. He warned that these efforts to manipulate the process would ultimately fail.

NCP Senior Joint Member Secretary Sarjis Alam, along with other central and local party leaders, were present at the event.
