Three people were hospitalized after a boat capsized and sank Monday evening on Lake Michigan near the 4700 block of DuSable Lake Shore Drive in Kenwood. The incident took place around 7 p.m., according to officials from the Chicago Fire Department.
Responding to a report of a boat sinking, the department’s scuba team arrived at the scene and rescued all seven individuals who had been on board. Of those rescued, three were transported to a nearby hospital for evaluation and treatment; authorities confirmed that their conditions were stable. The remaining four individuals declined medical attention at the scene.
The boat, which was approximately 20 yards from shore when it began to take on water and ultimately sank, became submerged in relatively shallow waters. Fire department representatives did not provide details on what caused the vessel to capsize or sink.
Emergency crews quickly secured the area and ensured the safety of those involved. No further injuries were reported in connection with the incident. Investigators are expected to determine the circumstances surrounding the boat’s sinking in the coming days.
