The body of an 18-year-old British man who went missing last year while hiking in Romania has been found, authorities confirmed. George Smyth, a geology student from Bristol, disappeared in November 2023 during a hike in the Bucegi Mountains, a mountainous area known for its rugged terrain.

Avon and Somerset Police stated that a body recovered in the Bucegi Mountain region is believed to be that of Smyth. While formal identification procedures are still ongoing, his family has been notified and is receiving support from a family liaison officer.

Smyth had been hiking in the area with the aim of reaching the village of Bran, which is notable for its medieval castle often associated with the Dracula legend. The Bucegi Mountains, where his body was found, are situated near Bran and are popular among hikers but can pose significant risks due to their challenging environment.

In a statement released through the police, Smyth’s family expressed deep sorrow over the loss. They described him as “the best of us” and noted that he is profoundly missed by his younger brothers, family members, and friends.
