Boko Haram militants attacked a military post in Chad’s Lake Chad region on Monday night, killing 23 soldiers and injuring 26 others, according to Chad’s armed forces. The assault took place on Barka Tolorom island, an area that has frequently been targeted by the Nigeria-based insurgent group.
Chad’s military reported that, despite the heavy casualties, a considerable number of the attackers were “neutralized” and ultimately driven back. The armed forces emphasized their continued efforts to repel the militant threat in the border region, which has been a hotspot for Boko Haram activity.
Boko Haram, which originated in Nigeria, has for more than 15 years launched cross-border attacks affecting Chad, Niger, and Cameroon. The group is known for its violent campaigns, which have resulted in the deaths of thousands and the displacement of millions, according to United Nations estimates. The ongoing instability has posed significant security challenges for the Lake Chad basin countries, hindering development and humanitarian efforts in the region.
Chad’s government and military continue to coordinate with neighboring countries in a joint regional response to the insurgency, aiming to improve border security and reduce Boko Haram’s operational capabilities. Despite repeated military operations against the group, Boko Haram remains an active threat, especially in areas surrounding Lake Chad.
