Bomb disposal specialists were called to a charity shop in Paignton, Devon, on Wednesday morning after a high-explosive mortar shell was discovered among donated items. The ordnance, identified as a British Army mortar shell dating from the 1930s to 1960s, was found by a staff member at the British Heart Foundation shop shortly after 9 a.m.

Police responded to the incident and requested assistance from experts based at the Devonport naval base. Upon examination, the bomb disposal team determined that the shell was safe to handle and transported it to Goodrington Beach, where a controlled detonation was conducted to neutralize the explosive device.

The unusual event attracted attention on social media, with local residents expressing both amusement and surprise. Comments ranged from lighthearted jokes to remarks on the unexpected nature of the donation. One user humorously noted the need for donations, not detonations, while another speculated about the donor’s identity. The incident also reportedly boosted store foot traffic, according to a staff member.

No injuries were reported, and the situation was resolved without further incident. Authorities reminded the public to exercise caution when handling or donating potentially hazardous items.
