Despite the iconic gadgets and globe-trotting adventures that define James Bond, the fictional spy notably lacks a consistent canine companion—a decision rooted in the personal preferences of his creator, Ian Fleming. Fleming's family, who retain creative control over the original Bond novels, have expressly prohibited the inclusion of pets for the character, reflecting the author’s known dislike of dogs.

Charlie Higson, an actor and author of five "Young Bond" novels, recounted how he was informed of this restriction after initially introducing a dog in his work. “I thought to myself, ‘He’s on an adventure, he should have a dog,’” Higson said, only to be told that Ian Fleming disliked dogs, leading to the dog’s removal from the story. He added that the limitation was perhaps beneficial creatively, noting the practical challenges of involving a dog in complex espionage plots.

While Fleming’s estate continues to oversee the twelve original Bond books, the James Bond film franchise has undergone significant changes in recent years. In 2025, Amazon completed a major acquisition, securing full creative control of the film series. This development marked a departure from decades of stewardship by the Broccoli family, who had managed the franchise since the release of its first film, "Dr No," in 1962.

The transition to Amazon’s ownership has raised concerns among fans about potential shifts in the franchise’s tone, with some fearing an “Americanisation” of the traditionally British series. Nevertheless, the Broccoli family’s long-time custodians, Barbara Broccoli and Michael G Wilson, have been praised by industry figures for their willingness to hand over control to a new entity after more than three decades.

Following Amazon's takeover, French-Canadian director Denis Villeneuve was announced to helm the next Bond film, with Steven Knight, the creator of "Peaky Blinders," enlisted to write the script. In May, Amazon officially began the search for Daniel Craig’s successor, fueling widespread speculation regarding the new actor to portray 007. Popular candidates include Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Theo James, Callum Turner, and Henry Cavill.

Pierce Brosnan, who portrayed Bond in four films between 1995 and 2002, expressed his hope that Craig’s replacement would be British, despite rumors that an American actor might be considered for the role. Brosnan also voiced mixed feelings about the Amazon acquisition, lamenting the change while acknowledging the courage shown by the Broccoli family in entrusting the franchise’s future to a major U.S. company.
