Oscar-winning director Bong Joon Ho has revealed the voice cast for his upcoming animated film "Ally," announced Tuesday on the opening day of the Cannes Film Festival. The project features a distinguished lineup including Bradley Cooper, Ayo Edebiri, Dave Bautista, Finn Wolfhard, Rachel House, Werner Herzog, and newcomer Alex Jayne Go.
"Ally" marks Bong’s first foray into 3D animation, a venture he has been developing since 2019. The family adventure is set beneath the South Pacific, centering on a curious piglet squid, reportedly voiced by Go, who embarks on a journey from the ocean’s depths to its surface after a mysterious aircraft crashes into her habitat. Specific character roles for the principal cast have not yet been disclosed.
The film will be distributed in North American theaters by Neon in 2027. This collaboration reunites the indie distributor with Bong, following their successful partnership on "Parasite," which notably became the first non-English-language film to win the Academy Award for Best Picture.
Bradley Cooper returns to voice acting in animation with "Ally," having previously portrayed Rocket Raccoon in Marvel’s "Guardians of the Galaxy" series. Ayo Edebiri, also part of the ensemble, is expected to attend Cannes for the premiere of "Clarissa," which is featured in the Directors’ Fortnight section of the festival. Dave Bautista, known for "Dune," Rachel House, who appeared in "Moana," and Finn Wolfhard of "Stranger Things" fame add further high-profile experience to the cast.
With its star-studded lineup and Bong’s distinctive storytelling, "Ally" is positioned as a notable addition to next year’s animation slate, combining innovative 3D techniques with an oceanic adventure narrative. Further details, including the full voice roles and release specifics beyond North America, are yet to be announced.
