At Boothby Wildland in the United Kingdom, a rewilding project is balancing ecological restoration with local agricultural concerns as it transitions from conventional farming toward a nature-focused landscape. The initiative, ongoing through 2023 and into 2024, involves reducing arable land use while promoting biodiversity and natural processes.
Boothby Wildland spans a considerable area, much of which was previously cultivated for grain production. Historically, crops such as wheat and beans were grown on the site, with the grain feeding livestock and the beans converted into fish feed for Norwegian salmon. However, as part of the rewilding effort, approximately two-thirds of the fields are now out of production, with only 150 hectares scheduled for wheat cultivation in the 2024 growing season. The wildland's agronomist has reported yields of 9.2 tonnes per hectare with 40% fewer chemical inputs compared to prior conventional farming methods, illustrating that the land remains productive under sustainable practices.
The project's leadership has shifted its public messaging in response to mixed local sentiment and concerns over the portrayal of Boothby as degraded farmland. Lorienne Whittle, the current site manager, emphasized the resilience of the land, asserting that it is capable of supporting both agriculture and ecological restoration. This rebalancing aims to acknowledge the land’s productive value while advancing rewilding goals.
Locals maintain a range of perspectives on the transformation. Some express cautious optimism but are “politely suspicious” of change, reflecting a broader skepticism toward departing from traditional farming practices. Amanda Dixon, a former landowner with decades of experience managing Boothby’s fields and woodlands, voiced the view that the land’s capacity for food production should not be underestimated. Despite her reservations, she remains open to the project’s ecological ambitions, particularly its efforts to restore native species such as nightingales, which once thrived in the area but have since disappeared due to habitat loss.
The conservation approach at Boothby Wildland represents a departure from conventional methods. Ranger Lloyd Park, a birder with over 14 years of traditional conservation experience, described rewilding as an adaptive strategy focused on allowing natural processes to unfold without aiming for a fixed ecological target. The project also incorporates active interventions designed to accelerate biodiversity recovery. These include placing dead wood in fields to facilitate seed dispersal by birds, restoring floodplain dynamics by altering river channels, and creating new ponds with support from external partners like Network Rail.
In addition to management activities, Boothby serves as a research site where multiple doctoral studies are underway to investigate the impacts of rewilding on insect populations and aquatic ecosystems. This combination of scientific inquiry and practical land management reflects a broader trend toward integrating ecological restoration with sustainable land use in the face of global biodiversity loss and concerns over future food security.
