A 26-year-old Thai airline worker was arrested at an Australian airport on suspicion of attempting to smuggle approximately one kilogram of heroin into the country. The Australian Border Force (ABF) identified irregularities in X-ray scans of 12 tote bags belonging to the woman, prompting further examination.

Upon inspection, ABF officers discovered a white substance concealed within false linings inside the bags, one of which featured a woven design with an elephant and the word “Thailand” printed on it. Laboratory tests confirmed the substance was heroin with an estimated street value of around AUD 500,000.

The woman, believed to be a flight attendant on a flight destined for Melbourne, was taken into custody by Australian Federal Police (AFP) officers. She has been charged with possession and importing a marketable quantity of a border-controlled substance. If found guilty, she could face a maximum prison term of 25 years.

Following her arrest, the woman was remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear before Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on September 14.

The ABF emphasized that criminal syndicates often exploit trusted individuals, including airline staff, to smuggle drugs into Australia. Commander Clint Sims stated that the agency employs intelligence-led strategies and various detection technologies to identify and apprehend those attempting to breach the nation’s border controls. He warned that anyone involved in importing illicit substances would be met with the full force of the law.
