Boreham Wood strengthened their grip on the National League summit with a 2-0 victory over Sutton United on Friday night, extending their lead to ten points ahead of Saturday’s fixtures. The unbeaten leaders secured their 11th win of the season thanks to second-half goals from defender Chris Bush and substitute Danny Cashman, both assisted by midfielder Zak Brunt, who now has 14 assists in 13 games.
Despite a strong start from Sutton, who applied early pressure and came close to scoring within the first minute when goalkeeper Ted Curd’s clearance was blocked and the ball nearly crossed the line, Boreham Wood maintained their composure. Sutton claimed the ball had fully crossed the goal line, but the officials allowed play to continue. Sutton’s attacking efforts in the first half were limited in clear-cut chances, with Temi Babalola heading over and Omar Mussa shooting twice from distance but finding Curd well-positioned to make the saves.
After making three substitutions at halftime, Sutton appeared to seek a turnaround, but Boreham Wood soon took control. The visitors grew more threatening following the break. A shot from Lewis Richardson was pushed wide by Sutton keeper Will Brits, and Bush put the hosts ahead when he powerfully headed a Brunt corner into the net. The goal was initially cleared off the line by Jake Taylor’s hand, but upon review, the officials awarded the goal. Sutton’s New Zealand goalkeeper Brits made a crucial save shortly after to deny Jay Bird, but their resistance ended with 10 minutes left. A poor clearance from Brits was collected by Regan Booty, who found Brunt in space to deliver a precise assist to Cashman. The forward finished confidently against his former loan club to secure the win.
Boreham Wood manager Luke Garrard praised his team’s second-half control while acknowledging room for improvement in sustaining attacks in the final third. “We’ve come away from home, got a clean sheet, on a Friday night under the lights, and we’ve gone and got a huge three points on the board,” Garrard said.
Sutton United’s manager Chris Agutter expressed frustration over missed opportunities and the disputed goal early in the match. “We pressed well and had opportunities, as I knew we would, but we haven’t made the best of them,” Agutter said. “We thought the ball was well over the line in the first minute, which is disappointing, but ultimately they were clinical and we weren’t so they deserved the win.”
The match was played in front of 2,348 spectators, with referee Matthew Russell overseeing proceedings. Boreham Wood’s win keeps them firmly in control at the top of the table as the National League season progresses.
