England head coach Steve Borthwick has named teenage winger Noah Caluori to make his international debut against Fiji in the upcoming Nations Championship match at Everton’s Hill Dickinson Stadium. The 19-year-old Saracens star, who finished as the Premiership's top try scorer, will come off the bench alongside fellow debutants Benhard Janse van Rensburg and George Kloska. The match, scheduled for this weekend, is seen as a crucial opportunity for England to halt a run of five consecutive defeats.
Borthwick expressed confidence in Caluori’s abilities, highlighting his skills under the high ball and athleticism. “Noah is incredibly talented,” Borthwick said, noting that the coaching staff intends to encourage the young player to express his natural talents rather than simply fitting into a rigid system. “With a player like that, we need to give him the opportunity to do what he does as well as anyone in the world.”
The selection also features Benhard Janse van Rensburg, a South African-born flanker, who was considered for a starting position. However, Borthwick opted for a more familiar combination in the back row, with Seb Atkinson and Henry Slade starting in midfield instead. “Everyone sees the talent of this guy,” Borthwick added of Van Rensburg. “The players love this guy: his character, personality, energy. We cannot wait to see him getting on the grass on Saturday.”
In addition to the debutants on the bench, there are other changes to the matchday squad. Guy Pepper has been selected to start at number seven over Henry Pollock, while Tom Curry will begin the game among the replacements. Henry Slade returns to the lineup, taking the outside centre role.
Borthwick also addressed questions regarding overseas-based players, specifically the case of Toulouse flanker Jack Willis. He reinforced that the current Rugby Football Union (RFU) eligibility rules, which are designed to support the domestic competitions, will be respected. “As head coach, I’m very clear on who I can select from,” Borthwick said, ruling out any attempts to bend the rules in order to include Willis.
England’s match against Fiji marks a significant test as the team looks to reverse its recent fortunes. The integration of several new players, including Caluori, is part of Borthwick’s strategy to revitalize the squad ahead of the remainder of the tournament.
