South Shields manager Mike Williamson expressed satisfaction with his team’s resilience after they held Merthyr Town to a 1-1 draw at home on Saturday. Despite being reduced to 10 men following captain Robbie Tinkler’s red card, the Mariners maintained their unbeaten start to the season in challenging, hot conditions on South Tyneside.
The first half saw limited action, but South Shields took the lead shortly after the break when defender Cain Sykes scored with a well-placed strike. However, the match turned following Tinkler’s dismissal, and Merthyr Town capitalized with an equalizer from Ben Margetson, who headed in a set-piece goal late in the game.
Williamson acknowledged disappointment over conceding the late goal but praised his players’ effort and work rate under difficult circumstances. “It’s a fair result overall,” he said, highlighting moments of control despite some defensive lapses earlier in the match. He also noted the impact of the unseasonably warm weather on his players’ performance.
In National League North action, Hebburn Town continued their strong start to their debut season at this level by securing their first ever away win in step two of English football, defeating Buxton 2-1. The Hornets, coached by Daniel Moore, took an early lead through striker Jake Charles, who scored within nine minutes. Buxton briefly leveled through Sisa Tuntulwana, but Charles completed a brace with a header from Liam Murray’s cross just before halftime. The victory extended Hebburn’s unbeaten run to 10 points from 12 available.
Meanwhile, Spennymoor Town suffered a heavy home defeat at Brewery Field against Oxford City, losing 4-1. After going behind to Scott Pollock’s opener, the Moors midfielder Jack Jenkins equalized. Oxford City then took control before halftime as Pollock completed a hat-trick with two quick goals. Josh Ashby added a fourth goal early in the second half to secure a convincing away win.
Darlington also faced defeat in a six-goal encounter at league newcomers Harborough Town. Although Paddy McLaughlin scored twice for Darlington, Steve Watson’s side were unable to overcome goals from Harborough’s Callum Powell, Michael Jacobs, Connor Kennedy, and former Middlesbrough forward Britt Assombalonga, who proved decisive in the 4-2 victory for the hosts.
