Boston College overcame an early deficit to secure a 49-27 victory over Georgia Tech on Saturday in Atlanta, marking a significant offensive display for the Eagles against an Atlantic Coast Conference opponent. The win improved Boston College’s record to 4-3 overall and 2-2 in ACC play, bringing them closer to bowl eligibility with two wins needed.
After falling behind 10-0 in the opening quarter, Boston College rallied behind a dominant rushing attack, amassing 399 yards on the ground and totaling 500 yards overall. The Eagles relied on their offensive line to overpower a Georgia Tech defense missing key players, enabling a balanced and effective ground game.
Quarterback Mason McKenzie was instrumental in the comeback, contributing three touchdowns—two rushing and one passing. Running back Bo Maccormack III added three rushing scores and finished with 155 yards on 20 carries. Defensive back Charlie Comella played a key role, intercepting two passes in the second half, including a pivotal 47-yard pick-six in the fourth quarter that extended the Eagles' lead to 42-20.
Georgia Tech, which fell to 2-5 overall and 1-3 in the ACC, started strong with a 4-yard touchdown catch by Kevin Roche Jr. and an Aidan Birr field goal, building a 13-0 lead. Despite penalties and a slow start, Boston College stayed within reach, trailing just 13-12 at halftime.
Boston College’s offensive line received a boost from the return of center Michael Crounse, which helped open running lanes for Maccormack and McKenzie. Maccormack, a Massachusetts native and state’s all-time leading high school rusher, broke through multiple times, including a 7-yard touchdown run late in the first half that put the Eagles ahead for the first time.
In the second half, Boston College extended their lead on a 2-yard touchdown run by Maccormack and a scoring run by McKenzie following Comella’s crucial interception. Georgia Tech responded with a 15-yard touchdown run by Justice Haynes and a 30-yard touchdown catch by Dalen Penson, but Boston College maintained control with additional scores from McKenzie and Maccormack.
Coach Bill O’Brien praised his team’s resilience, noting the contrast between the team’s first-quarter struggles and their strong performance in the remaining quarters. Boston College now looks to maintain this momentum as they pursue the wins needed for postseason eligibility.
