Boston United secured a 3-1 victory over Forest Green Rovers at The New Lawn on Saturday, ending their own five-match winless streak in a National League encounter. The Pilgrims took an early lead through Tom Cursons, who netted twice, while Lennon Wheeldon added a late third goal to secure the win.
The scoring began almost immediately, with Cursons finding the net just 45 seconds into the match after being played through on goal, giving Boston an ideal start. However, Forest Green responded swiftly, with Jayden Clarke equalizing within two minutes by calmly finishing from the edge of the penalty area.
Boston manager Paul Hurst described the match as “a bit of a strange game,” noting that although his team began strongly, Forest Green quickly applied pressure. “In the end it was relatively comfortable,” Hurst said, reflecting on a tense previous encounter from last season that finished 3-2. He also highlighted the importance of the victory, emphasizing the three points gained against a squad considered by many as potential play-off contenders.
Despite Forest Green’s resilience, the visitors regained the lead shortly after the second half kicked off. A penalty was awarded when Gabe Kircough was fouled by Tom Cursons inside the box, allowing Cursons to convert from the spot and complete his brace. Boston then sealed the win with Wheeldon’s near-post finish from a Georgie Gent corner in the 75th minute.
Forest Green manager Robbie Savage expressed frustration, particularly over a missed opportunity early in the second half. D’Mani Mellor’s header from close range struck an empty goal but failed to score, a moment Savage described as “incredible” and incomprehensible. He also lamented giving away a penalty and emphasized the impact of missed chances on the result. “The stats will say the same thing, if you don’t take your chances that is what happens,” said Savage.
The defeat ended Forest Green’s three-game unbeaten run, while Boston United moved off the bottom of the table with a much-needed morale-boosting win.
