Arsenal's pursuit of a Premier League title suffered a significant setback after a 2-1 home defeat to Bournemouth at Emirates Stadium on Saturday. The loss prevented the league leaders from extending their advantage over second-placed Manchester City to 12 points, with Arsenal now having lost three of their last four matches across all competitions.
Bournemouth took an early lead through Junior Kroupi in the 17th minute, before Arsenal’s Viktor Gyökeres equalized from the penalty spot in the 35th. However, Arsenal struggled to generate scoring opportunities in the second half, and Alex Scott secured a late winner for Bournemouth in the 74th minute. The victory marked Bournemouth’s second consecutive win at Arsenal in Premier League play and extended the club’s unbeaten streak to a record 12 games.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta acknowledged the impact of the loss, describing it as a “big punch to the face” and emphasizing the need for resilience in the remaining fixtures. The defeat also compounds pressure on Arsenal as they prepare for a crucial encounter against Manchester City on April 19. City, who have a game in hand, could narrow the points gap with a win in that fixture. Arteta highlighted the challenges ahead, noting that the club’s long wait for a league title since 2004 underscores the difficulty of the task.
Arsenal’s recent form has raised concerns after earlier exits from domestic cup competitions, including losses to Manchester City in the English League Cup final and second-division Southampton in the FA Cup quarterfinals. Although Arsenal secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Sporting Lisbon in the first leg of their Champions League quarterfinal on Tuesday, the latest league defeat adds further complications to their title ambitions.
Elsewhere, Liverpool celebrated a promising performance in a 2-0 win over Fulham at Anfield. Seventeen-year-old forward Rio Ngumoha opened the scoring with a well-executed solo goal, marking his first Anfield goal. Mohamed Salah added a second before halftime, delivering his final home goal for Liverpool as he prepares to leave the club at the end of the season. Liverpool’s victory consolidates their hold on fifth place, improving their position in the race for Champions League qualification by four points over Chelsea in sixth.
In other Premier League action, Everton fought back twice to secure a 2-2 draw at Brentford. Brentford’s Igor Thiago scored from the penalty spot early and added a second goal in the 76th minute, while Everton’s Beto and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, who scored in stoppage time, kept their side from defeat. Despite the draw, Brentford missed an opportunity to move into sixth place. Meanwhile, Brighton defeated Burnley 2-0 with Mats Wieffer scoring in both halves to help maintain their position in the top half of the table.
