The Visit Qatar Sussex Stakes is set to offer a record prize fund of £1.5 million this year, making it the most valuable mile race in Europe. The Group 1 event will take place at Glorious Goodwood on July 29, attracting a competitive field that includes the unbeaten colt Bow Echo, who currently leads the betting at 6-4.
Bow Echo, trained by George Boughey, has secured victories in both the 2,000 Guineas and the St James’s Palace Stakes. Speaking ahead of the race, Boughey described the increased prize money as a significant boost for British racing and confirmed that Goodwood was always the target for the colt this season. The Sussex Stakes will also mark Bow Echo’s first contest against older horses, adding an extra challenge to his campaign. “It’s shaping up to be a fantastic race,” Boughey said, expressing anticipation for a strong competition.
Among the 32 entries confirmed so far is Gstaad, the Irish 2,000 Guineas winner who was runner-up to Bow Echo at both Newmarket and Royal Ascot. Gstaad’s inclusion adds depth to the lineup as he seeks to reverse previous results against Bow Echo.
The race also features several accomplished older horses, including Opera Ballo, Notable Speech, and Talk Of New York, all of whom compete under the Godolphin banner. Another notable entrant is More Thunder, rounding out a highly competitive field expected to provide an exciting contest at Goodwood.
The substantial increase in prize money reflects the race organizers’ commitment to elevating the prestige of the Sussex Stakes, positioning it as a key highlight of the British flat racing calendar. With a high-quality field and a historic purse, this year’s event promises to draw significant attention from racing enthusiasts and industry stakeholders alike.
